In our small tutorial “How to draw Manga”, we start with a rather difficult part: the face. First draw a circle, which should appear a bit like an oval. In this circle you place lines in the form of a cross.

In whatever relationship to these horizontal and vertical central lines you will now position the eyes, nose and chin; this will determine if it is an adult or a child.

Furthermore, you can design and determine the individual expression of a face by locating the small Manga nose or the mouth simply to the left or right from the central vertical line.

If you're drawing a child, you must pay attention to the following: the face is rather rounder, the eyes appear bigger than the normal and their distance below the mouth is only very minimal. Another essential point is that the bridge of the nose is hardly distinctive. Here is a rule of thumb: to make a face appear younger or more childish, the eyes and ears should be positioned below the horizontal line.

A Manga face distinguishes itself through a slight showing of the nose or by dropping it altogether. Furthermore two huge over-proportioned eyes are dominating the face.
